Misconceptions All Around

During my time in the military, I was always amazed at the funny things that people believed from various regions. Any time I said I was from Washington, they either assumed it was DC or “the rainy place.” The first question was always about the rain, because most people aren’t aware that Washington has regions, nor are they aware of the weather of places that aren’t “always rainy” like Sequim. Of course, Seattle rains far less than many major cities, but a single drop of mist each day is enough to make any news crew cry “30 days of straight rain.” Of course, I was foolish enough to grow up thinking that other places were like Washington in that they have a summer where it rains less rather than more (*cough* the South! *cough*).

I though I’d show some interesting screencaps from Accuweather.com.

Seattle weather compared to Tucson
So of course Tucson is warmer, but, wait a minute, more sun in Seattle than in a desert???

Seattle weather compared to Shaw AFB, SC
Woah now, warmer in Seattle than in the South?

Seattle weather compared to Houston
The obligatory Seattle versus Houston image

Seattle weather compared to San Francisco
Oh okay, finally Seattle is rainier than another city… wait a minute, no rain and it is listed as more rain? I guess this is part of the stereotype…

The funny thing was that I took those screenshots while on a Mac. Now, I’ve learned to use Windows, OSX, and Linux depending on the needs, so I found this update request particularly entertaining…

- preventing AFP deadlocks and dropped connections
- saving Adobe and Quark documents to AFP mounted volumes
- Bluetooth file transfers, pairing and connecting to a Bluetooth mouse, and syncing to mobile phones
- audio playback in QuickTime, iTunes, Final Cut Pro, and Soundtrack applications
- ensuring icons are spaced correctly when viewed on desktop
- determining the space required to burn folders
- iChat audio and video connectivity, creating chat rooms when using AIM
- importing files into Keynote 3
- PDF workflows when using iCal and iPhoto
- reliable use of Automator actions within workflows
- importing and removing fonts in Font Book
- syncing addresses, bookmarks, calendar events and files to .Mac
- compatibility with third party applications and devices
- previous standalone security updates

Now, I wouldn’t pick on OSX if it weren’t for all their commercials lately, claiming “PC’s” (presumably Windows XP systems) are basically useless out of the box and security-/virus-prone. Certainly, some of that based in reality, but I wonder how an anti-Mac commercial would go with the same attitude…

PC: Well, I’m going to go play a game really fast, wanna join me?
Mac: Ah, nope, I am still trying to figure out how to space my icons… after I get that settled, I’m hoping to understand how much data can fit onto a burned disc.
PC: Oh, well why don’t you try a third party application?
Mac: I don’t think I’m compatible yet; plus, my security is lacking…
