I use my personalized Google homepage in order to have a lot of information handy all at once (RSS feeds, emails, news info, etc.). When I am not logged in, the homepage shows the defaults and one of the items always shows a couple of how-to links. This morning, I saw one for How To Save Money and I wondered what more could they put on this page than “don’t spend it.”
Amazingly enough, the page doesn’t look like this:
- Check how much you have in your checking account at the bank
- Decide how much you have to spend on bills
- Subtract that from the amount you have in your checking account
- Transfer most of that amount from your checking account to your savings account
- Don’t spend the money in your savings account
- Cry when you realize inflation is more than your interest so you are essentially losing money
Ultimately, saving money requires self-control. Self-control is quickly becoming like common sense: extinct. Common cents on the other hand are quickly becoming a nuisance.
