How To Save Money

I use my personalized Google homepage in order to have a lot of information handy all at once (RSS feeds, emails, news info, etc.). When I am not logged in, the homepage shows the defaults and one of the items always shows a couple of how-to links. This morning, I saw one for How To Save Money and I wondered what more could they put on this page than “don’t spend it.”

Amazingly enough, the page doesn’t look like this:

  1. Check how much you have in your checking account at the bank
  2. Decide how much you have to spend on bills
  3. Subtract that from the amount you have in your checking account
  4. Transfer most of that amount from your checking account to your savings account
  5. Don’t spend the money in your savings account
  6. Cry when you realize inflation is more than your interest so you are essentially losing money

Ultimately, saving money requires self-control. Self-control is quickly becoming like common sense: extinct. Common cents on the other hand are quickly becoming a nuisance.
