That First Line
Published May 31st, 2007 in Small TalkI saw a contest for writing the best opening line to a novel or other written work, so I thought about it and came up with one. Then I found out the contest costs five dollars to enter, so I decided to pass. Anyway, for the curious, here is my bloated, overdone sentence:
I had always felt a particular bond with the wind, enjoying the way it would tease a thin skirt, lifting and dropping it, inciting cat calls from onlookers while combating their whistling with its own as it rushed through the trees, but today, today it stole my balance and I knew our relationship had changed as I tumbled over the cliff’s edge.

I’m intrigued - do you have more of a story that goes along with this first line?
Nope, that’s it. Of course with an interesting first line it’s a lot easier to keep writing; the hardest part is simply starting. I hope this summer will give me the opportunity to take up writing again.
