The Thought Process
Published December 5th, 2007 in Small TalkI am always thinking about something or having a mental conversation (or even more than one at a time), but I wonder if other people are the same. Do other people think in the same way or about the same things? My accrued personal evidence seems to suggest that many people do not think at all, but I figured I could share the strange ways in which my brain works and perhaps others would share theirs.
Sometimes my thoughts are not entirely logical: I don’t remember a time when I didn’t exist and I haven’t died, so I have lived and will continue to live forever. My thoughts sometimes get jumbled too, and I end up fingercutting my paper.
This morning I saw an Office Depot van and it had a decal that said “Sponsor of NASCAR.” I wondered about how most sponsors pick logical, related events to sponsor. A sports drink might sponsor an athletic event. A tire company might sponsor a race car. Microsoft might sponsor crash testing. So, I wondered about the NASCAR/Office Depot connection. Perhaps the drivers were so bored doing the same thing over and over that they decided to take up office work while racing, maybe completing their taxes while making another left turn. My other thought was that perhaps the levels of boredom are related: NASCAR is boring and so is most office work so people will connect the two in their minds.
Then I started thinking that Target should sponsor terrorists and give them all free t-shirts with the big, red Target logo. That thought led to me deciding I should keep track of some of the random thoughts from my bus ride this morning. If you didn’t know that I am strange, here’s your evidence:
People with big lips scare me. Maybe it’s just white people with big lips… wait, was that racist? Hmm… have I ever seen an Asian person with big lips?
Then I saw a girl wearing expensive torn jeans and I thought:
Why are so many of the recent styles so dumb? Torn jeans, baggy pants… Can’t middle class people find clothes that fit and aren’t torn up? I bet half the guys who wear baggy pants have cheap WalMart boxers made in China with lead. At least they aren’t wearing thongs. Ack, bad image! Uh… Ferrari, Ferrari! Fast, red Ferrari… tires squeeling… ah, much better.
After that we passed by a bus stop that was for buses going the other way and I saw a single man standing there.
Was that guy having a good conversation with himself? It looked like an argument. Was he winning the argument?
Share your thought process on your blog or in the comments. If you don’t, I’ll assume you’re one of those people who don’t think at all… or maybe the kind of person who has better things to do…
