I upgraded to the latest version of WordPress and it mostly went smoothly, but now caching is broken. I tried everything I can think of, but it’s still not working. The pages are cached successfully, but the cached pages are never served. WP Super Cache considers them instantly expired (even cached pages that were just generated) unless I change the expire time to more than two hours, but it still doesn’t serve the pages then. I spent a few hours getting frustrated, so I’m giving up for now. Hopefully the server doesn’t mind doing some heavy lifting until I figure this out.
I have also updated the spam blocking plugins that I use, so let me know if there is any trouble with comments (or anything else). Hopefully they will reduce my daily workload, since I’ve had a lot less time to spend on computers lately.
One last thing I’ve noticed is that the new version of WordPress seems to be stuck telling me that one of my plugins has an update (via a “speech bubble” above the plugins link), but none of the plugins actually show updates available on the plugin page. Updates are so rarely pain-free these days….
Since you bothered to read all that, check out this YouTube video of a man cheating death. It’s pretty crazy!

Ian,
Ah, the pleasure of upgrades that leave the old stuff behind… way behind.
I had noticed that although I checked “Notify me of followup comments via e-mail, no notifications ever arrived.
I know you are very busy. I thank you for paying attention to me.
Robert
Upgrades always seem to be a double-edged sword. Have you ever received any of the follow-up comment emails? I did a quick look and saw that your email address had a typo for one of the posts (and I fixed it), but it was right on the others. I’ll take a deeper look into it this weekend. Hopefully it’s something simple enough.
It looks like the emails are being rejected by your provider, Robert. I also had a permissions problem on my server that prevented storing the rejected message, so I didn’t see any notification of it until I went looking through the logs. I’ve made some changes to my mail server config, so we’ll see if that helps get it through to you…
Ian,
Your comment immediately above did come as an email to me.
Robert
Glad to hear it, Robert. I had to make some other changes to the config and I think I got all issues taken care of now. Sending and receiving for gordaen.com appears to be working again.
Ian, are you saying that surviving a WordPress upgrade is a bit like cheating death?
Hmm, actually, I think cheating death might be easier…
