This was the first sketch I actually did in my sketch book (done 14Oct08); this is loosely based on a sample sketch in the old portrait book I previously mentioned. I used a 2B and a 6B pencil. The pencils combined with the recycled paper that the sketch book is made of are the main reasons that this sketch looks so much different from the previous two. This one took about an hour, but I did it while trying to catch up on Heroes.
Every major feature (eyes, mouth, nose, ears, etc.) has some flaw that I can see, but I am pleased with the overall result and had a lot of fun (and perhaps was carried away with) shading. I also love the suggestion of a collar with just a few lines. You can see the rough edges, particularly along the left side of the jaw (subject’s right), but they seem to add to the intrigue of the drawing. Or, maybe I just tell myself that, because I like to draw “outside of the lines.” Hmm…
