A very dark and undetailed charcoal portrait of a female

While at the grocery store (6Nov08), I picked up some cheap charcoal sticks. I often pick up inexpensive art supplies when trying out a new medium, just in case I dislike it. Of course, if you know me, you know that I love to try just about anything a few times before my interests shift.

As you can tell, this drawing is exceedingly dark and lacks much detail. I did the whole thing in charcoal, using a photo reference and trying to get a feel for the medium. It’s messy. It’s crumbly. It’s fun. In the future, I would love to pick up some quality artists’ charcoal, but I’d like to improve with the cheap stuff before trying to move up.

This one took me about thirty minutes, not counting the time it took to wash my hands afterward.
