First off, I have to apologize for such a lousy addition to the sketch book, but I told myself that I would share every sketch, even the terrible ones. This essentially looks like three people who were created by scribbling. It looks like that, because that is really what it is. Gesture drawing is when you very quickly (in about a minute) capture the “essence” of someone’s/something’s action (or inaction).
I had an extremely hard time doing this, because I tend to focus on minute details (so much so that I largely miss how things connect together, making some of my art have parts that are incredibly detailed and parts that are incredibly disproportionate). Gesture drawing forces you to just look at the overall shape and your quick impression of it. You don’t have time to capture the details like facial expressions (though you can see that I tried). You have to do the drawing fast, but you also have to do it without stopping the pencil and without lifting it. So, it’s kind of like Pictionary.
Don’t worry; tomorrow’s sketch book entry is awesome! It makes up for this one and then some.
