Sketch Book 11: Male Torso

Sketch of a male torso
I drew this male torso night of the 17th but had quite a bit of difficulty with the scanner. The next night I had a bit more patience, but I still was not getting very good scans. The old scanner seems to always miss details, and the best I could get of this sketch is with blown highlights (as in a loss of detail where the shading is light). The edge of the paper is also off-color due to it being slightly raised from the binding. I do have a new printer/scanner on the way, but I don’t know if it will be any better.

One of the important things to do when drawing is to learn underlying structure. For humans, that means a basic study of anatomy. In this case, I focused on muscles and simple shading with a 2B pencil. For some reason, muscles have always been interesting to depict in my artwork (along with flowing cloth and the curves of the female form). I may take a look at skeletal structure in the future though, because who doesn’t love skeletons?
