Sketch Book 12: Face and Skull

Drawing of a skull with a face on a portion of it

As I had hinted, the next (this) entry in my sketch book involved skeletal structure. I was actually planning on drawing most of a body with part of it sort of X-ray-ish, allowing the underlying bones to be seen. While I was flipping through the anatomy portion of the book I was looking at, I saw a small skull, and it changed my idea to this.

It was really hard to figure out where to start. With a normal portrait, I start with a basic oval and then figure out rough positioning for the eyes, mouth, and nose. It’s a lot trickier when only part of the face has skin and “normal” facial features. The eye sockets are a lot bigger than our actual eyes, and our actual eyes are a lot bigger than we typically realize (since the lids hid so much), which throws off the typical near-symmetry of the face.

Anyway, this one came out fairly well, though there are some details I would like to have done differently. What next? I have no idea at the moment.
