Sketch Book 13: Female Posing

Pencil drawing of a female leaning against a tree trunk

This time, I decided to grab a photography book that I have, which is all about taking outdoor portraits. I flipped through it and found a few photos that looked like they would be fun to draw, and I ended up settling on the photo that this drawing is based on. I spent about two hours on this drawing, continually redoing sections to try to improve it.

The proportions are off quite a bit, but I’m pleased with the overall drawing. I think that I did the lighting on the left effectively and the hand isn’t quite hideous enough to completely distract the viewer. Still, I ought to spend some time practicing drawing hands, because I am terrible at this point. I redrew it a dozen times, and it still doesn’t look right. The face looks okay, but it does not significantly resemble the model. I purposely kept the tree trunk extremely simple, because it isn’t meant to be the focus (and the brown bit is caused by the scanner). I’m learning… and my back is aching, but I had only a small bit of frustration and a large chunk of fun.
