I happened to be unable to sleep last night and decided to play around with my favorite medium (charcoal). This is based on a small sketch by Giovanni Givardi in his book Drawing the Human Body: An Anatomical Guide. If you’re an aspiring artist, I highly recommend this book. It has a few hundred sketches of both male and female bodies in a huge variety of poses, so you can see how different poses affect the muscles, bones, etc. I frequently find myself looking at it for inspiration and ideas.

Anyway, This one turned out pretty well. I cut it short at the bottom to keep the focus above, though I should have done so in a more artistic way. The hands turned out relatively well, considering how difficult fine detail is with charcoal. Like any drawing, there are plenty of imperfections, but it certainly felt good to be creative again. All things considered, it’s a decent drawing considering how long it has been since the last one!

It has been a while since I did anything artistic, so I have been feeling like getting back to it the past few days. I finally did so today and spent about an hour drawing an eagle with charcoal. I used a random reference from a Google Images search, but I viewed it on my phone only, so I would just get the overall shapes from it. Of course, you can only do so much detail with charcoal anyway.

I also took snapshot of my progress every few minutes, using my Nexus One phone. Here are some scaled down versions for quick comparison:

This is the final sketch I did on the 27th (Friday). It’s also in charcoal and based on an anatomical sketch from one of my art reference books. Her face is terrible, but the rest is okay. She looks slightly wider than she should be, so her ribs look a bit off.

I also did this sketch on the 27th (Friday) with charcoal. It’s not perfect, especially her head, but it came out pretty well, and I’m definitely still in love with charcoal. This is based on an example anatomical sketch from one of my reference books.

I actually did this charcoal sketch directly after the previous pencil sketch because I disliked the other so much, haha. This one is very simplistic but shows a decent amount of form for being such a quick sketch.

This is a simple/quick sketch of an arm and back of a male subject, using a soft pencil (maybe 6B?). Yeah, it’s definitely rough and not really worth posting other than because of my decision to post every page of my sketch book. I’ll queue up some posts for the next few days to try to catch up though, and those sketches are much better than this one.

I decided to do a quick sketch to try to get in an art mood tonight and decided that I really need to spend some time on hands, so that’s what I sketched. This is done with vine charcoal, and I have to admit that I love charcoal. I used to not like it very much because you really lose the ability to create the type of sharp details you can create with a 2H pencil, but I absolutely love the ability to create such strong contrasts now.

I spent maybe 20-30 minutes on this sketch, and it turned out reasonably well. The fingers are a bit short and stubby, and the positioning is a little off, but I think it turned out okay. Now, it’s time to eat some bratwursts.
